    Eyeglasses for Haiti and Argentina
    02/12/2010

Have you ever noticed in television footage or photographs that none of the people in third world countries are wearing eyeglasses? I never gave it much thought until I visited my optometrist last week! When I inquired as to whether he would have a use for my old eyeglasses I was informed that he is collecting used frames, lenses and/or complete sets of eyeglasses to be donated to persons in Haiti and Argentina. He stated that he and several other optometrists in the area are traveling to Haiti at least twice this year and he is going to Argentina this summer. The purpose of these trips will be to perform complete eye exams and dispense appropriate eyewear as best they can through the donations of individuals like you and me.

People in these countries and others have not had the means to correct their vision in the past. Dr. Leon Colbert plans to help change that on an annual basis! He is committed to using his own time and money to travel and bring the gift of clear eyesight to as many people as he possibly can. We all can assist in this endeavor by providing him with otherwise discarded eyewear. If the lens is missing or broken, he can use the frame. If the frames were reused to make your new pair, he would love to have the old lenses. He stated that it would not matter if they were large horn-rimmed frames that are 30 years old - for those that are in need, just being able to see more clearly is appreciated.

The first trip is scheduled for March 1st.  He has about 200 pair on hand now, with a goal of 500 for this first trip. If you or anyone you know can donate to this cause, please send your glasses/frames/lenses to this address as soon as possible.
