As a person ages, they need more regular exercise to maintain wellness and relieve tension and anxiety. The form of exercise may vary, but there are some heart safe precautions that all seniors should consider before beginning an exercise program.
- Find out if you have a familiy history of heart disease. Consult with your doctor and have a physical examination and take a graded exercise test before beginning.
- Start off at a reasonable pace, avoiding intense exercise at first and progress gradually, especially if you have been mostly sedentary.
- Choose exercises and activities that you enjoy and can do year round. Focusing on activities that are rhythmic, repetetive and challenge the the circulatory system.

- Find a buddy to exercise with you, it will help you stay encouraged and on a regular schedule.
- Your clothing and footwear should be comfortable, fitted properly and appropriate for the temperature, humidity and activity.
- Make sure you exercise in a safe, well lit place, and on surfaces that are smooth. Many seniors choose to walk in shopping malls.
- To avoid injury, warm up by stretching slowly and make sure you take the time to cool down after your work out.
- Drink water on a regular schedule. Don’t rely on your sense of thirst, especially if you will be exercising in hot, humid conditions.
