02/08/2010 CARESOUTH DONATIONS FOR HAITI RELIEF EXCEED EXPECTATIONS
AUGUSTA, Ga. – On Wednesday, February 3, a volunteer from CareSouth Homecare Professionals drove a moving van packed with more than $20,000 worth of emergency medical supplies and money to Atlanta to help in the relief efforts for Haiti.
As word of the earthquake in Haiti spread on January 12, CareSouth’s corporate offices began plans for an internal campaign to gather much needed medical supplies for the survivors. CareSouth offices across seven states were asked to pack and ship their excess medical supplies to the corporate office in Augusta by January 27. The boxes would then be packed in a van and driven to Atlanta for delivery to MedShare. MedShare is a non-profit organization that gathers medical supplies that would otherwise be thrown away and ships them to third-world countries in dire need. “As soon as the news hit, the emails and phone calls started. Our employees were anxious to find ways to help the Haiti earthquake victims,” said Ken Bell, Vice President of Human Resources. “When the suggestion was made to donate medical supplies through MedShare we knew we had enough expired and excess medical supplies to fill a van. What we didn’t realize was the extent of our employees’ generosity. The campaign truly took on a life of its own.”
CareSouth employees began donating items and money from their own pockets. The boxes filled the storage area with more boxes expected. To help with the purchase of more medical supplies, CareSouth corporate employees donated $700 and the company added an additional $2500. The result of the campaign is in a rented moving van that will be on the way to Atlanta with a combined value in donations and medical supplies totaling more than $20,000.
